Ever wondered why you find something Inexplicably Hot?
I’m here to help.
It all began on a camping trip as I watched my fellow camper grab an axe and start chopping wood. ‘Goddamn,’ I thought.
Then it got me thinking, why do I find wood chopping so inexplicably hot? Let me think on that one and get back to you.
I began asking around and marvelled at my friends’ suggestions, adding them to a long, l-o-n-g list. Then I decided to write about them. So here we are.
INEXPLICABLY HOT #1:
TEA TOWEL THROWN OVER THE SHOULDER
Picture this…
…aromas of olive oil and garlic fill the kitchen, sweat beads roll down a glass of chilled chardonnay next to the stove … as a man with his back to you is holding a pan and stirring, deep in concentration… tea towel over the shoulder. He’s cooking you dinner and as you sit perched on a stool watching, you can’t help but think, ‘Goddamn’.
A man cooking up a delicious meal is one thing, but the tea towel thrown over the shoulder while in the kitchen? Inexplicably hot.
Let’s take a minute to unpack this.
The tea towel over the shoulder sends strong ‘not my first rodeo’ vibes. He knows his way around a kitchen, he’s skilled, he's a safety sam - no burned fingers here, and clean ones at that.
It’s about control. He is going about his business, concentrating, maybe occasionally moving his hips to the dinner tunes, throwing a witticism your way, eyebrow arched. Performative? Maybe, but who cares? This is all about the slow burn.
Cooking for you is also a nod to the famous five love languages - a bilingual combo of the act of service and quality time. Sure taking out the bins is a step in the right direction but the love language tapping into the five senses too?
Yes, honey, plate me up.
